WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO DO NEWBORN PHOTOS? DID I MISS THE NEWBORN WINDOW?

If you’re wondering when the “right” time is to book newborn photos, you’ve probably heard that the first two weeks or within the first month are ideal.

And while those early days can be incredibly sweet to document, I want you to know something just as important: if your baby is already a few months old, it is absolutely not too late.

I recently had the sweetest session with a 4-month-old baby. Yes, this baby was bigger than a newborn. She had grown, changed, and was already showing more of her personality.

But she was still a baby.

Still tiny in Mom and Dad’s arms.

Still those little hands and feet.

Still the baby they had been waiting so long to meet.

Still a stage they will eventually look back on and miss.

And honestly? That is what matters most.

So, When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?

For a traditional newborn session, I typically recommend scheduling photos within the first couple of weeks after birth. Those early days have a very particular feel — sleepy, fresh, and brand new.

But there is no magic expiration date on capturing your baby.

Maybe the first few weeks flew by. Maybe you were still recovering, adjusting to life with a newborn and simply trying to survive those early days (Your girl can relate). If you intended to book a session and suddenly realized your tiny newborn isn't quite so tiny anymore...Please don't let that stop you from reaching out!

Your baby at 6 weeks is worth documenting. Your baby at 2 months is worth documenting. Your baby at 4 months is worth documenting.

Your Baby May Be Bigger, But They're Still Your Baby

One of my favorite things about photographing babies who are a little older is getting to capture more of who they are.

At four months, you may get more eye contact, smiles, personality, and interaction. Your baby may be awake more. They may be fascinated by Mom and Dad.

They may have started discovering their hands, making adorable expressions, or showing off that little personality that is beginning to emerge.

It might not look exactly like a traditional newborn session — and that's okay.

So, Did You Miss the Newborn Window?

Maybe. But you didn't miss the opportunity to capture this season.

If your baby is a few months old and you've been thinking, "I guess it's too late now," I hope you'll reconsider.

Your baby doesn't need to be fresh out of the hospital for their photos to matter. They just need to be your baby.

And I promise, you'll still look back at these images years from now and wonder how they were ever so little!
